Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) is court-ordered outpatient treatment for the seriously mentally ill population. AOT is currently allowed by law in Washington D.C. and forty-eight states. Massachusetts and Connecticut don't allow AOT.
Passing AOT in Massachusetts would not only reduce rates of homelessness, incarceration, and hospitalizations among those living with serious mental illness. It would also hold the system accountable. Currently, there is no accountability, and families are left with no help when their loved ones suffer from anosognosia and are too sick to know they need help.
