Massachusetts Residents

Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) is court-ordered treatment for the seriously mentally ill population. AOT is currently allowed by law in Washington D.C. and forty-eight states. Massachusetts and Connecticut don't allow AOT.

Take Action

Legislative Update

Why AOT?

Passing AOT in Massachusetts would not only reduce rates of homelessness, incarceration, and hospitalizations among those living with serious mental illness. It would also hold the system accountable. Currently, there is no accountability, and families are left with no help when their loved ones suffer from anosognosia and are too sick to know they need help.

New Bills

The AOT bills for the new legislative session have been filed:

  • S.1115 - An Act to Provide Continuum of Care For Severe Mental Illness was filed by Senator Cindy Friedman

  • H.1801 - An Act to Provide Continuum of Care For Severe Mental Illness was filed by Representative Bradley Jones

If you live in MA, please write to both your Senator and Representative asking them to co-sponsor these two bills.
